Our 9-Hole Leagues

EWGA of Greater Philadelphia sponsors a number of 9-hole leagues throughout the metropolitan area. All of them tee off on weeknights after work. As an EWGA member, you may play in one or several of these leagues. Typically members choose one league as their "home,"and then may occasionally play at other locations. Guests may play twice to "try us out" before joining, but then they must join EWGA to continue participating.

The league at Westover Country Club is especially welcoming to new golfers and you may feel more comfortable there if you are just starting out. Island Green Wednesday night league also welcomes beginners and will host a series of "Getting Started" lessons to learn the game.

Our other leagues are geared toward Intermediate and Advanced players, but beginners are welcome to play at any of our leagues as long as they follow our Pace of Play guidelines and graciously pick up their ball if they are falling behind. Read about playing levels here.

New! Traveling Match Play League

dot2_small
Dot Rooney, Coordinator
Match play is the second most popular form of competition in golf, after stroke play. If you've never played it, it's a really fun alternative to stroke play and something you should certainly try.

Click here to read about how match play works.

Here is the information:

This league is open to experienced golfer with a USGA verifiable handicap of 29 or less. It is also a nice way to meet other players. You can bring other friends along if you like, but they will not be a part of the match. You could also contact some of the other match play league members to join you.

Prizes will be awarded to the winner and the runner up.

The league will be an elimination format

League play will begin the first week of May. You will receive your first competitor and it is up to you to arrange a mutually agreeable course and date. You will have 3 weeks to get your match in. Don't wait until the end of the 3 weeks in case the weather is bad. No one should be expected to take off from work in order to play a match.

Dates for each round:

  • May 2-May 22
  • May 23-June 12
  • June 13-July 3
  • July 4-July 24

Once you have played your match, the results should be given to the league coordinator via e-mail. Your next match opponent will then be assigned.

Format:

Winner from Round 1 move on to the Championship division Round 2
Losers from Round 1 move on to the Consolation division Round 2
Winners from Round 2 progress on; losers are eliminated

This progresses through multiple rounds until there is 1 player left in each division.

Most of us are rather unfamiliar with this format, so don't be afraid to give it a try.  Contact Dot Rooney for more details, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Each player will keep a current handicap and check it when it is updated every 2 weeks. The league coordinator or player will determine a course handicap, to determine your handicap on each hole.

For example, on the first hole, your par may be 6 instead of 4.   Instead of playing against another player, you will be playing against par.  If you hole out in 6, you tie for par.  If you're lying 6 and still not in the hole, pick up your ball and move on -- the hole beat you!  If you score a 5, you win and you are one up!

Normally, in match play, you do not have to finish playing the remaining holes, but once the winner of the match has been determined, you can continue to play the rest of the holes, but you no longer count them in the score.

If you finish the match 5 up you will get 5 points that week. If you win 2 up, you will get 2 points.  If you lose the match, you get 0 points. A tie will require examining the scorecard using the hardest hole.

Definition of Match Play

Match play is one of the main forms of competition in golf. It pits players one against another, rather than one against the field as in stroke play. Opponents compete to win individual holes, and the player who wins the most holes wins the match.

Levels of Play

These are suggested levels of play for our EWGA Leagues. They are a guide to help you find a league where you will be most comfortable. You are welcome to play at any league as long as you maintain the pace of play, follow golf etiquette, and pick up your ball whennecessary to speed play.

Beginner Golfer

You are a player with little or no experience. You may or may not have taken lessons previously. Perhaps you have visited the driving range but have little on-course experience. You are unfamiliar with pace of play guidelines, golf rules and golf etiquette.

We suggest you join one of our EWGA golf leagues specifically designed to help beginners like you. Usually these leagues offer clinics to improve your skills and ease your transition onto the golf course. Experienced EWGA golfers are available to mentor new golfers and teach you appropriate golf etiquette. Golf can be intimidating to a beginner.Supporting new golfers like you is a primary goal of EWGA.

Intermediate Golfer

You have played on the golf course and are able to keep up the pace of play with better players. Your scores may still be high, but you most likely have established a handicap to watch your improvement. You may still find yourself in those "blow-up" holes, but you graciously pick up your ball when necessary to maintain the pace of play. You are comfortable with golf etiquette by now and your knowledge of golf rules is improving.

We suggest you play regularly in any of our EWGA leagues in the Greater Philadelphia area. We welcome you to attend any of our outings, and encourage you to take part in our annual Chapter Championship and the nationwide EWGA Championship.

Advanced Golfer

You have played for a number of years and have a handicap. You are comfortable with golf rules and etiquette and are able to play with golfers of all ability levels. You play golf regularly, perhaps competitively, and may serve as a mentor to EWGA members who are beginner or intermediate golfers.

Pace of Play Guidelines
time_small.jpgEWGA endorses the 4.5-hour 18-hole rule. That means a 9-hole round of golf should take no longer than 2.25 hours. To achieve this, your foursome should take only 15 minutes per hole.

Pace of play is an important issue for everyone in golf, but it's really crucial for women.  Let's face it, we've all heard men talk about those "s-l-o-o-o-o-w" ladies on the course.  We know we don't deserve that rap.  So let's be sure we don't give anyone reason to pin it on us.

Slow play hurts everyone, and often the "slowskys" don't realize how they impact others.  On league night, for example, your EWGA friends may not be able to finish in daylight if the starting groups play too slowly.  In your foursome, if you make your partners wait and wait for each shot, you throw off their tempo and ruin their enjoyment for the game.

We're not saying everyone has to be a scratch golfer.  Few of us are!  You just need to play efficiently and know when to pick up your ball and move on.  Everyone will enjoy your company on the course if you maintain the pace of play.  But let's be blunt.  No one wants to play with a chronic "slowsky!"

Please follow these rules:

  • Look to the group in front of you (not behind you) to check your pace of play.
  • This means when you are on a Par 4, you should be able to see the group in front of you on the green.
  • On a Par 5, you should be able to see the group in front of you in the fairway.
  • On a Par 3, you should see the group in front of you on or leaving the green.
  • If you have lost sight of the group in front of you, your pace of play is too slow and you must pick up your pace.
  • Here are some tips to play more efficiently:

  •   Plan your next shot while walking to your ball.
  •   When two women are sharing a cart, drop one off at her ball while the other moves the cart toward hers.
  •   Be attentive.  Slow players tend to go into suspended animation until someone jolts them to consciousness by announcing they are away.
  •   Limit practice swings.  If your practice swing takes 10 seconds and you take 3 practice swings on each hole, that adds up to 9 minutes for an 18-hole round!
  •   Update your score at the next tee box, not at the green.
  •   Always stage golf bags or carts off the area around the green and positioned toward the next tee.
  •   Help your partners. Help others find their lost balls. Watch others hit and watch the ball flight to help find balls quickly. (Don’t spend more than a few minutes looking for your ball.)
  •   Always play “Ready Golf”. Socialize between holes, not in the fairways.
  •   Let the low handicapper in each group be the timekeeper.  Be gracious if she asks you to pick up or speed your pace of play.
  •  If your ball prefers a swim to romping in the grass, drop another ball that likes the grass.  Do not spend an eternity (maximum of 3 minutes) looking for the ball -- that ball is gone!  The same applies to balls that enjoy playing hide and seek in the woods and tall grass.
  •  Golf balls and golf clubs are very devoted to each other. Therefore if you approach the golf ball without a golf club in your hand, the golf ball gets really upset. Please take a club with you and be ready to hit the ball. Your golf ball will be happier!.
  • Use these guidelines for when to pick up your ball:

    On a Par 3 Hole:
Pick up your ball after three shots in the fairway. Toss ball onto green and putt. Max 6 shots.

    On a Par 4 Hole:
Pick up your ball after five shots in the fairway. Toss ball onto green and putt. Max 10 shots.

    On a Par 5 Hole:
Pick up your ball after six shots in the fairway. Toss ball onto green and putt. Max 10 shots.

    Remember ...

Your position on the golf course is one shot behind the group in front of you, not one shot ahead of the group behind you.

Keep them in the fairway, putt straight and have a great time.
