Pat Sierzant's lucky hat DID bring a winning score at the Gainesville, VA semi-finals
In one of the most successful semi-final tournaments -- if not THE all-time best showing -- for our Chaper players, 7 of our Philly golfers won the chance to advance to the National Tournament in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin this October.

The following players won their flights at August 14th's semi finals at Virginia Oaks golf course in Gainesville, VA and will advance:

Susan Hunsicker- first low net in 2nd flight – net score 72

Donna McBride – 1st Low gross in 3rd Flight- gross score 100

Pat Sierzant- 1st low net in 4th flight- Net score 76

And the  scramble team of Florence Larcamp, Nancy Bleam, Maureen Gorman and Vicki Smith. Net score of 70

The following players won't go to Wisconsin, but placed in their flight and earned a very nice trophy for the mantle:

Jennifer Dorfmeister – 2nd low gross in Championship flight – gross score 90

Jane Allison – 3rd low net in 2nd flight- Net score 76

Our other golfers played valiantly, but just missed the cut:

Peggy Hughes
Barb Smith
JoAnn Kane

Lorrie Day was invited to compete, but declined.

Low scores were hard to come by at this challenging and very narrow course.  Congratulate all our players when you see them at leagues!

Philly EWGA to Offer Hands-on Rules Lessons

New for 2011: "I've never played in a golf tournament"

Iball_clubf you have never played in a tournament because you did not feel comfortable enough with the rules, or your skill level, or for whatever reason, this is the event for you.

The idea is to pair you with someone who has played in tournaments and can help answer your questions before, during, and after the outing. No handicap will be needed to register for this event.

You and your partner will each play your own ball, just as you would in a normal stroke play event. However, your partner will be available to explain rules, help spot your ball, and generally help you to feel comfortable and have a good time.

This will be a 9 hole event followed by snacks/drinks and a time for questions, discussion, etc.

We are still in the planning stages and will keep you updated as specifics become available. Our plan is to have the event early in the season (April/May) on a weekend late in the afternoon. We are excited about the idea and hope many of you will join us for this inaugural event for the Greater Philadelphia Chapter.

Questions, ideas, suggestions?

Temperatures "Sizzled," but our Golfers Didn't Wilt!

sizzler_2010This year's Philadelphia EWGA Summer Sizzler proved to be one of the hottest on record.  Despite temperatures around 95 degrees, members enjoyed two days of golf at Harbor Pines Golf Course in Egg Harbor Township, NJ and Blue Heron Pines Golf Course in Cologne, NJ on July 15 and 16.

Rougly 50 women played each day.  Some stayed overnight in the area and enjoyed both days of play.  Others just came for one day and relaxed on the course away from the workday grind.

Both courses posed real challenges and required good course management skills.  Many of us found the number of sand bunkers quite daunting and magnets for our golf balls.

Golf Events Chair, Tish Lawson, did a super job organizing the event.  After each round she awarded prizes for the following:  Stoke Play:  1st Low Gross, 2nd Low Gross, 1st Low net and 2nd Low Net.  For Scramble Play:  1st Low Gross and 1st Low Net.  Prizes also went to golfers who won closest to the pin, longest drive, straightest drive and fewest putts.

View photos of the event here.

President

Candidate: Dorothy Rooney

dot_rooney_palm_springsYour company and job title:
Self-employed dentist. Dorothy A. Rooney, DMD, PC

How many years have you been a member of EWGA and in which EWGA Chapters?
Member of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter since 2005

What EWGA leadership positions have you held?
League Co-coordinator at Island Green 2006-2009, VP 10/2007-10/2009, Chapter Championship Director 2008-2009; Golf Education Chair 2009, President 10/2009 - present

What leadership positions have you held in other professional or non-professional organizations?
President Eastern Dental Society for 2 years; on the board for 8 years

Why are you interested in holding this position?

* I would like to continue working on some of the programs that I have started.
* As VP, I also took on the position as Golf Education Chair. We had very successful clinics with Becky Dengler last year. I was also able to get the S.W.I.N.G. program (now Fairway Friends) to be the number #1 chapter in the country for matching up mentors with mentees. I would like to continue to work on giving members access to a variety of golf instruction for all levels.
* The Traveling Match Play League has been a huge success and I would like to expand it next year to include more members with higher handicaps.

What ideas or goals do you have to move the Chapter forward and how you plan to accomplish them?

* When I first joined the board, there were a few vacant spots. To date, we have been able to recruit members to fill all the board positions, except Vice President. I hope to continue to work with other board members in recruiting volunteers. My challenge to them will be to each recruit at least one committee member so that we can share the work load and meet new members.

* I would like to grow the chapter membership and expand the number of league sites, if possible.

* I would also like to recruit student members by contacting golf coaches in the area schools.

* I have been a contacted by Judy Stout, regional director for The First Tee. We are in the process of working on an affiliation with EWGA, The First Tee and LPGA Girls Golf in the tri-state area to increase the growth of girls’ golf and use EWGA members as mentors to these girls. The goal is to keep the girls interested through the high school years and then into college.

* Networking has been a challenge in the chapter. I would like to find a way to increase the networking opportunities for members. I will be looking for a member that wants that benefit from her EWGA membership.

* I would also like to see more social events in the chapter. This can be a challenge in a chapter this large, therefore, I think that we need to start thinking of social events on a league level, but always open it to all members if they choose to travel. This will involve working closely with the Social Chair to meet this goal.

Join Fairway Friends to Mentor or Learn

marybeth_smallFairway Friends is a mentoring program in which experienced golfers partner with new golfers to help them feel comfortable on the golf course. Fairway Friends is what the EWGA is all about - helping women enter the game of golf in a fun, supportive environment.

Who is a Fairway Friend Mentor?

A mentor is an experienced, but not necessarily good golfer who guides a new golfer on pace of play, basic rules, and proper etiquette on and off the golf course. Also, a mentor may guide the new member on how to participate in other EWGA events.

Who is a Fairway Friend Mentee?

A mentee is someone making the transition from instruction to playing on a golf course. A mentee is paired with a mentor to guide them around the golf course safely and answer questions about etiquette, basic rules, and the other nuances of the game in order to build confidence and comfort in the golf course setting.
