summer_sizzler_08_0001smallOur annual Summer Sizzler at the Jersey shore is fast approaching and we expect to welcome many guests and non-Philly EWGA members to this 2-day golf extravaganza.

Please be assured you can use our online registration system even if you are not a Philly EWGA member.

In fact, since we introduced the website registration system last year, we have done away with paper registrations.

Here's what you need to do:
- If you don't have an account on our website, you must create one.  Just go to the "Join our Community" box on the left-hand side of the page.  Click on "Register" and set up your account.

- You will get a confirmation email to which you must reply.  It comes right away, so if you don't see it, check your spam folder.

- Once you've done that, you can log in to the site, find the "2009 Events" box on the left and register.  You can use PayPal or pay by check.

A very small percentage of people have trouble with this if they are using the aol browser.  If you have difficulties because of this, use Firefox or Internet Explorer and you should be fine.

Everyone's a Winner at Chapter Championship!

Dot Rooney prepares scorecards for Barb Smith, Donna McBride & Caroline Brinker
Twenty-one EWGA Philly golfers headed to Bucks County Country Club in Jamison to compete in our annual Chapter Championship on June 27.

Twelve successful competitors won their flight and will advance to the Sectional Tournament at Hershey Links on August 8.  Lucky winners at that level move on to the National EWGA Championship at Port St. Lucie, FL in September.

The event was originally scheduled for Saturday June 20, but had to be postponed at the last minute when heavy rains started falling soon after everyone had checked in.

The new date offered beautiful sunshine, low humidity and a very challenging round of golf.  Competition at the first flight was especially fierce, with Jennifer Dorfmeister and Peggy Hughes finishing with a tie score of 93.  Organizer Dot Rooney held a one-hole playoff to break the tie.  Both players will move on to sectionals:  Jennifer earned Low Gross and Peggy took home Low Net.

Skies Clear for River Cup

river_cup_articleA soaking rain on Friday didn't dampen the enthusiasm at Saturday's EWGA River Cup event at Island Green Country Club on June 6.

The "Cart Path Only" rule made the day a little more tedious, but the 27 Philly EWGA golfers had a great time anyway.  Since our New Jersey counterparts couldn't make this year's tournament, we tweaked the rules to make it a two-player better ball all Philly contest.  Winners Mo Gorman and Vici Smith scored an impressive net 67.

Tish Lawson scored an exceptionally rare Eagle on hole #17.  She also won fewest putts with 31.

Vici Smith shot closest to the pin on both #8 and #15 and also earned a birdie on #7.

Kimberton Outing a Great Success

kimberton_articleForty-eight women from EWGA Philly enjoyed a great day of golf at Kimberton Golf Club on May 16.

Some of us were still a little rusty at the beginning of the season, but not so for these winners:

Low net - Clare Kelly
Low Gross - Joanne Kane
Straightest Drive - Jamie D'angelo
Closest to the pin - Fran D'Andrea
Fewest Putts - Bernadette Beaupre and Tish Lawson
Scramble Team - Tia Tuvesson, Carol Underwood, Cindy Salisbury, and Linda Borromeo.

Congratulations, all! Many thanks to Christa McQuillen for organizing the event, Rita Lee for helping with registration and Marj Metcalf for doing the pairings and scorecards!

Sharpen your Skills at our Annual Chapter Championship

champ_logoYour EWGA membership provides lots of opportunities for leisurely, social golf, but many of you also enjoy the challenge of true competition. Our annual Chapter Championship, to be held at Bucks County Country Club on June 20, fits that bill.

Many women say they didn't really lower their handicaps until they played "serious" golf in the Chapter Championship. Don't be afraid to enter because you think your handicap is too high. There are four flights in the tournament, and you are assigned to a flight based on your handicap. That means you are only competing against women whose golf abilites are similar to your own. You may also play competetive scramble.

Playing in the championship is often the best way to really learn the rules of golf. And if you win your flight -- either low gross or low net -- you move on to the sectional tournament in August at Hershey and perhaps the national tournament at Port St. Lucie, FL in September.

Organizer Dot Rooney says a few things are new this year:
  • You may use personal measuring devices at all EWGA events and tournaments
  • Caddies are only permitted at the final competition in Port St. Lucie, FL
  • You only need to post TWO 18-hole scores or four 9-hole scores between April and June 20 in order to quality.
  • For competitive scramble teams, only one player may have a handicap of 16 or less.

2009 Handicap Incentives: 2 Ways to Win $$!
ball_tee_smallerEWGA Philly strongly encourages all members to establish and maintain an official golf handicap. It's a great way to watch your game improve and -- even better -- it can help you win $$$ this year in two ways:

1. Win a prize just for posting your scores to the Golf Life Managment System (GLMS)! All you need to do is post 10 scores to be eligible for a cash award of $50 at the end of the season. All members posting 10 scores will participate in a random draw for the prize.  Don’t miss out -- post your scores after every golf round. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

2. Win a prize for most improved player.  At the close of the season the 3 players who improved the most (based on their handicaps) will receive a cash award:  $50 for first place; $40 for second; and $30 for third. The handicap system automatically calculates the improvement factor. Look for updates from our Handicap Chair, Bernadette Beaupre, as the season progresses!

How do you get started? Read more about handicaps here, then look for the Handicap Links module on the left-hand side of this page to activate the GLMS or post scores. Check the module often because Bernadette will post her updates there throughout the season.
